Recruiters at US and global companies hiring remote Software Engineers outside the US usually screen for three things in the first 30 seconds: a clear mid-level or senior title that matches the role, concrete evidence of shipped production software (not just tasks), and the exact stack they use, named in their own terms. They also check whether you can work across time zones, communicate in written English, and handle contractor or employer-of-record arrangements without friction. A resume that reads well for a local employer in Warsaw or Lisbon often fails here because it assumes shared context: local company names without a description of their size or product, vague responsibilities, and no mention of the scale or business impact that a US hiring manager needs to compare you with applicants from across the world.
What changes versus a local resume is the level of specificity and the format. US readers expect a one-page document, a headline that states your title in market English, bullets that follow a clear pattern of what you did, how it was measured, and how you did it, and a skills section that mirrors the job posting. Describe each employer by its product and approximate size (for example, B2B SaaS with about 200 employees) so the reader understands the context. Remove photos, dates of birth, marital status and national ID numbers. Put your remote-work readiness and English level where a recruiter can see it at a glance.
What your resume must show
- Your current or most recent title stated in market English (for example Mid-level or Senior Software Engineer) so it matches the posting exactly.
- The exact names of the core languages, frameworks and cloud platforms the job lists, written once in full and once as the common acronym where one exists, in both a role bullet and the skills section.
- At least one measurable result per recent role (users served, latency reduced, cost cut, release frequency, team size), kept exactly as you reported it.
- A short summary line that states years of professional software engineering experience and the product domain you have worked in, such as B2B SaaS or payments.
- Your English proficiency with a CEFR level and proof (certificate, years of work in English), plus your work arrangement (independent contractor, B2B invoicing, or EOR provider) and time zone.

Common mistakes outside the US
- Listing only job duties without outcomes; fix it by rewriting each bullet to state what you delivered, how it was measured, and how you did it.
- Using local company names with no context; fix it by adding one line on the product and approximate headcount under each employer.
- Writing local job titles or degree names that US readers misread; fix it by using market English titles (Junior, Mid-level, Senior) and standard degree translations.
- Burying the stack in paragraphs; fix it by repeating the exact tool names from the job posting in your role bullets and a dedicated skills block.
- Leaving out work authorization and time zone, which forces recruiters to guess; fix it by stating your arrangement (contractor or EOR) and your UTC offset in the header.

Should I include a photo or my full home address?
No. Remove photos, date of birth and full street address. Keep city, country and time zone so recruiters can judge remote fit without extra personal data.
How do I handle a degree from a local university that US readers may not know?
Translate the degree name into the closest English equivalent (for example B.Eng. or M.Sc.), keep the school's original name, and add a short note on the country if the name is not widely known.
Is one page enough for a senior engineer?
Usually yes. Keep the most recent role to 3 to 5 bullets and older roles to 1 to 3, and focus on the stack and outcomes that match the posting. Go to two pages only if you have substantial relevant publications or open-source work.
