What recruiters abroad look for

Recruiters at US and global companies hiring remote Scrum Masters want evidence that you have run real Scrum teams, not just attended certifications. They look for a clear title history, the number of teams and people you supported, the delivery and flow metrics you moved (sprint predictability, cycle time, escaped defects, release frequency), and the tools you used day to day, most often Jira, Confluence and Azure DevOps or GitHub. They also check English fluency in writing, because most of the coordination happens asynchronously in Slack, Jira comments and Confluence pages. Many screeners filter quickly on exact keywords such as Scrum, Agile, Jira, facilitation and stakeholder management, so those terms must appear in plain form.

A local resume often differs in three ways. First, it lists the company and the local job title without explaining the scope in terms a US reader understands, so write the team size, product type and number of stakeholders. Second, it relies on a general 'project management' summary; for this role, name the framework (Scrum, Kanban, SAFe if used) and the certification (for example PSM I or CSM) with the year. Third, it omits the time zone, work authorization and contract model, which remote employers ask about first, so state them in the header and in the FAQ answers below.

What your resume must show

  1. Your current or most recent job title must read Scrum Master (or Agile Coach / Delivery Lead if that is the real title), with dates and the company listed.
  2. Your years of hands-on Scrum Master experience must be stated explicitly, for example 'Scrum Master, 4 years', in the summary or the role line.
  3. The specific Scrum events you facilitated (sprint planning, daily scrum, sprint review, retrospective, backlog refinement) must appear in your bullets.
  4. The tools you used must be named exactly as the job posting writes them, such as Jira, Confluence and Azure DevOps, with the acronym (e.g. 'Azure DevOps (ADO)') used once.
  5. Your English level, time zone and work arrangement (contractor, EOR or direct hire) must appear in the header so a remote recruiter can screen you in ten seconds.

Common mistakes outside the US

  1. Listing only job titles without team size or product scope; fix it by adding the number of people and teams you supported in each role.
  2. Writing duties ('responsible for daily stand-ups') instead of outcomes; fix it by stating what changed, such as 'cut sprint carry-over from 30 percent to 10 percent'.
  3. Using a local CV format with photo, date of birth and marital status; fix it by removing all personal data that is not relevant to work eligibility.
  4. Hiding the time zone and location, which causes remote recruiters to assume you cannot overlap with their team; fix it by writing your city, country and UTC offset in the header.
  5. Leaving out certifications or listing them without dates; fix it by adding the full name and year, for example 'Professional Scrum Master I (PSM I), 2022', and the Scrum.org or Scrum Alliance ID if you have it.

FAQ

Do I need a US address or work authorization to apply for remote Scrum Master jobs?

No, but you must state whether you can work as an independent contractor, through an Employer of Record such as Deel or Remote, or only as a direct hire. Many US companies hire contractors abroad and handle tax forms through the platform, so be clear about which you accept.

Is a Scrum certification required?

It is not always required, but many remote postings list it as preferred. PSM I from Scrum.org or CSM from Scrum Alliance is recognized, so list the full name, year and ID number if you have one.

How should I handle the time zone gap with US teams?

State your UTC offset in the header and write your overlap window in your application, for example '4 hours overlap with US Eastern'. Recruiters compare this against their stand-up and planning times before they read the rest of your resume.
