What recruiters abroad look for

Recruiters at US and global companies hiring remote Data Engineers look for evidence that you have built and run production data pipelines, not just used them. They scan for specific tools (Python, SQL, Spark, Airflow, dbt, a cloud warehouse such as Snowflake, BigQuery or Redshift), for the scale you handled (rows per day, number of sources, number of users served), and for measurable outcomes like faster load times, lower cloud cost or fewer data incidents. They also check whether your title, years of experience and domain match what they posted, and they expect a clear statement of your work authorization and English level near the top.

What changes compared with a local resume: the US convention is one page for under roughly ten years of experience, reverse-chronological order, no photo, no date of birth or marital status, and a plain English job title that matches market usage. Salary expectations are usually discussed later, but time zone overlap, contract versus employee-of-record arrangements, and your ability to work US hours are often asked early. Tool names should be written exactly as the job posting writes them, and acronyms should appear once in full form and once abbreviated so keyword filters and human readers both match.

What your resume must show

  1. Your current or most recent title is written as Data Engineer (or Senior Data Engineer if that matches your level) in the headline and in the role line.
  2. Each core tool from the job posting (for example Python, SQL, Apache Spark, Airflow, dbt, Snowflake) appears in at least one bullet tied to a specific role, not only in a skills list.
  3. At least one bullet states a measurable result, such as data volume processed, pipeline runtime reduced, or number of downstream users, with the number written out.
  4. Your location, time zone and remote availability are stated in the header so recruiters can judge overlap with US hours.
  5. Your English level is given as a CEFR level with proof (certificate name or years of working in English), and your work arrangement (independent contractor or employer of record) is stated.

Common mistakes outside the US

  1. Using a local job title that US recruiters do not recognize, such as a translated or regional label; fix it by writing the closest market-English title that matches your real duties.
  2. Listing tools only in a skills section without any experience bullet that proves how you used them; fix it by adding at least one role-linked bullet per core tool.
  3. Writing duties without numbers ("responsible for data pipelines"); fix it by adding the data volume, number of sources, runtime, or users affected, using only figures you can actually support.
  4. Omitting time zone and work authorization, which leads recruiters to assume you cannot work US hours or need visa sponsorship; fix it by adding your city, UTC offset, and an explicit remote and contract statement in the header.
  5. Including a photo, date of birth, nationality, or a long objective statement that takes space from achievements; fix it by removing personal details and replacing the objective with a three-line summary of your experience and focus.
  6. Using a two-page layout or unexplained gaps and foreign degree names; fix it by keeping to one page and translating your degree into its closest English equivalent with the school's original name.
  7. Overusing vague adjectives that recruiters ignore; fix it by replacing each adjective with the specific fact it implies, such as the tool, team size, or result.

FAQ

Should I include my salary expectations on my resume?

No. Leave salary off the resume and discuss it during the recruiter call, where you can give a range in USD or EUR and specify whether it is gross or net of contractor fees.

Do US companies care about my degree from a European university?

They care less about the degree than about proof of hands-on work, but list it with the school's original name and translate the degree into its closest English equivalent, such as B.Eng. or M.Sc., so filters recognize it.

How do I show I can work US hours from Europe?

State your city and UTC offset in the header, mention the overlap window you can guarantee (for example, six hours with US Eastern Time), and confirm your availability in the first reply to a recruiter.
