What recruiters abroad look for

Recruiters at US and global companies hiring a Frontend Engineer for remote work mostly screen in the first 30 seconds for three things: the exact framework and language stack (React, TypeScript, Next.js, and so on), evidence of production scale such as users served, page performance, or team size, and proof that you can work asynchronously with a US-hours team. They also check that your written English is clear and that your work authorization or contracting setup is simple to handle. A resume written for a local European employer often leads with education, uses vague duties like "responsible for the frontend," and never states the tools in the exact words the job posting uses.

What changes for a US-facing remote application: put the job's own tool names in your bullets, quantify results with users, load times, conversion, or test coverage, drop photos, date-of-birth, and marital status, and state your location with a UTC offset so the recruiter can judge overlap with their hours. Keep the page to one or two pages, use US Letter formatting, and show your contracting model (contractor or EOR) in the header.

What your resume must show

  1. Your current title and total years of frontend experience appear in the headline or first summary line.
  2. Each core tool from the job posting (for example React, TypeScript, Next.js) is named explicitly in at least one role's bullet, using the posting's exact spelling.
  3. At least one bullet shows scale with a number such as users, pages, team size, or load-time change.
  4. Your time zone (UTC offset) and availability overlap with US working hours are stated in the header.
  5. Your English level is stated with a CEFR grade and a proof source such as a certificate or past US-team work.

Common mistakes outside the US

  1. Listing a photo, date of birth, or marital status, which US recruiters treat as noise or a bias risk; remove them entirely.
  2. Using local job titles or seniority labels that US recruiters cannot map; use market English titles such as Mid-level or Senior Frontend Engineer.
  3. Writing duties without outcomes, such as "worked on the UI"; rewrite each bullet as accomplished X, measured by Y, by doing Z.
  4. Omitting the tool names from the job posting or burying them in a skills list only; repeat the exact terms inside experience bullets.
  5. Leaving out your work setup, so the recruiter cannot tell if you can be hired; state contractor status or that you are available via an EOR provider like Deel.

FAQ

Do US companies hire Frontend Engineers from Europe on a contract basis?

Yes. Many US and global companies hire through independent contracts or an Employer of Record such as Deel or Remote.com, which handles local payroll and tax compliance. State your preferred model in your header so recruiters can act quickly.

Should I include a salary expectation or my current location's cost of living on my resume?

Leave salary out of the resume and answer it in the application form or first call, using a US dollar annual figure for a contractor or full-time role. Your location and UTC offset belong on the resume because they affect time-zone fit.

How do I show my portfolio if my projects were for local clients under NDA?

Describe the work in terms of outcomes and scale without naming confidential clients, and add a public GitHub profile, a personal site, or a short case study for one open-source or side project using the same tools listed in your resume.
