What recruiters abroad look for

Recruiters at US and global companies hiring a Social Media Manager remotely look for proof that you have owned a channel end to end: planning content, running paid and organic campaigns, reporting results in numbers, and working with the platforms and tools their team already uses. They want to see channel ownership, audience growth, engagement and conversion tied to business goals, and clear collaboration with marketing, sales or product teams. Because they will not meet you in person, they also check for written English that reads naturally, a time zone overlap they can work with, and evidence you have managed budgets and approvals without close supervision.

A resume for a US or global employer differs from a local European one in several ways. Lead with metrics rather than duties, use the platform and tool names the job posting uses, state your scope (followers, post volume, team size, budget) in concrete terms, and drop photos, date of birth, marital status and national ID details that are normal locally but unnecessary here. Use US Letter format, one page for under ten years of experience, and make your location and work eligibility explicit so screening tools do not filter you out before a human reads the file.

What your resume must show

  1. Your current or most recent title in market English (for example Social Media Manager or Senior Social Media Manager) appears in the headline and the first role entry.
  2. Each major platform the job posting names (for example Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, Meta Ads) appears in at least one role line that shows what you did with it.
  3. Two or three measurable results per recent role, such as follower growth, engagement rate, lead volume or cost per acquisition, each with the time frame.
  4. Scope is stated clearly: number of channels managed, monthly post volume, budget size or team size you coordinated.
  5. Your work arrangement and time zone are visible near the top, for example Available as independent contractor or via EOR (Deel), with a time zone or UTC offset.

Common mistakes outside the US

  1. Listing duties such as responsible for social media instead of results, so fix it by writing each bullet as an accomplishment with a number and a method.
  2. Using local job titles or translated titles that US recruiters do not recognize, so fix it by choosing the closest market English title and keeping the local name in brackets only if needed.
  3. Omitting the US-standard tool names, such as writing Facebook Business Manager in a local language, so fix it by using the exact platform and tool names from the job posting.
  4. Leaving out the time zone and work authorization, so fix it by stating your location, UTC offset and how you are engaged in the summary or header.
  5. Including a photo, date of birth or a long personal section, which adds nothing for US hiring and can trigger bias concerns, so fix it by removing them and using the space for metrics and tools.

FAQ

Should I apply to US companies if I live in Europe or Latin America?

Yes, if you can work the hours that overlap with their core time zone and you are open to contractor or EOR arrangements, because many US and global companies hire remotely from abroad.

Do I need a US degree or US work experience?

No, a degree from your home country is accepted, but it should be listed in English with the school's original name, and your portfolio and results matter more than where you studied.

How do I show my work when I cannot share client accounts?

Build a short portfolio with anonymized case studies, screenshots of approved public posts, and metrics you are allowed to share, and link it from your resume header.
